The English Cementery is the oldest non-Roman Catholic Christian Cemetery in Spain. It is in Málaga. The cemetery contains more than 1000 graves and approximately 30 are graves og children. The graves og the children are covered by shells.
In Spain , bodies of non-Roman Catholics weren´t permitted to be interred by day, but had to be taken down to the seashore at night by torchlight and buried in an upright position in the sand and then left to the mercy of the waves and the dogs.
It was built in 1831.
The cemetery has also a church called St. George Anglican Church since 1850.
In this cemetery some famous peoples are buried:
*Gerald Brenan: was born on 7 April 1894 in Malta, and died on 19 January 1987 (aged 92) in Alhaurin el Grande , Málaga, Spain.
Gerald was a Brithish writer and Hispanish who spent much of his life in Spain.
*Gamel Woolsey: was born in May 1895 in California, and died in January 1968 (73 years old) in Spain. Woolsey was an American poet and novelist.
*Jorge Guillén: was born in January 1893 in Valladolid, Spain, and died in February 1984 (aged 91) in Málaga, Spain. Jorge Guillén was a Spanish poet, a member of the Generation of 27, as well as a university teacher, scholar and literary critic.
*Aarne Haapakoski: was born in 1904 in Savonia, and died in 1961 Málaga (aged 57). He was a Finnish pulp writer.
The cemetery is also a botanical garden with a number of unusual specimens of trees and plants.
